Hydroxyl-terminated polybutadiene resins are typically immiscible with polyester polyols. As a result, the preparation ofthermoplastic polyurethanes based on both types of polyol required the sequential reaction of each polyol with the 4,4’-methylenebis(phenyl isocyanate) (4,4’-MDI) component. The properties of the resulting thermoplastic polyurethanes werenot influenced by the addition sequence of each polyol, but strongly dependent on the chain extender and the chemicalcomposition of the polyester polyol. This dual polyol usage is designed to provide TPUs with enhanced mechanicalproperties compared to polybutadiene-based thermoplastic elastomers and improved hydrolytic resistance versus polyesterbasedTPUs.
