Organic global trade

Organic farming is a high profile success story. In the UK, market growth for certified organic produce continues to rise, and in 2005 increased by 30%, a three-fold rise on the previous year, to total almost 1.6 billion in sales. To put this in perspective, the annual current growth for all UK food and drink sales is around three per cent. The global market for organic food and drink totaled 16.7 billion in 2005, an increase of 1.2 billion. It is estimated that 34% of organic primary produce sold in the UK through the multiple retailers is imported.
