Magnetomechanical Coupling in Stress Annealed Fe-Ga and Fe-Al Alloys

Magnetomechanical properties (coupling factor, piezomagnetic d-constant, and permeability) are reported as a function of both magnetic field (0 to 400Oe) and applied stress (-100 to +50MPa) for Fe{sub}(100-x)Ga{sub}x and Fe{sub}(100-x)Al{sub}x (x~18). Stress Annealing of (1/4)"x~2" rods under uniaxial compressive loads up to 200MPa near 600°C for periods of 20 minutes created uniaxial internal magnetic energies of ~10kJ/m{sup}3. Magnetic field dependences of single crystal and [100] textured polycrystal samples were measured for fixed compressive stresses before and after stress annealing and are fitted using the expression: E=-J{sub}sμ{sub}oH{sub}zα{sub}z+K{sub}(cubic)((α{sub}x){sup}4+(α{sub}y){sup}4+(α{sub}z){sup}4)+K{sub}(uniaxial)(α{sub}z){sup}2-λ{sub}(sat)T(α{sub}z){sup}2.
