As storage capacity of hard disk drives increases the requirements for position control of the read/write head becomes more challenging to satisfy [1], especially for control firmware that is required to operate in the presence of hard disk drive product variability. The contribution of this work is to incorporate product variability into a low-order control design based on model uncertainty. A method for including uncertainty into control synthesis is to design the servo controller using a worst-case H{sub}∞ approach [2] via a well known mixed-sensitivity approach [3].
