Nonlinear transition shift (NLTS) and nonlinear amplitude distortion (NLAD) in perpendicular magnetic recording were investigated for CoPtCr-SiO{sub}2 media with various SiO{sub}2 contents. The nonlinear distortion consists of NLTS and NLAD such as partial erasure. Optimization of pre-compensation to minimize error rate requires comprehensive understandings for these nonlinearities. In this work, the NLTS and NLAD were discriminated and nonlinearity for various perpendicular media was studied.
