The Timken ADAPT~(TM) Bearing for Slab Support Rolls in Continuous Slab Casters

Today, metal processing equipment handles heavier loads, faster speeds and greater output than ever before. World steel production reached 1.65 billion tons in 2013 of which 96% was processed through approximately 2000 continuous casters [1l Finished product quality requirements continue to tighten and producers place ever greater emphasis on equipment uptime, performance and ease of maintenance. There have been countless developments in the design of these machines over the last sixty years that touch all aspects of their operation. This paper addresses the design, installation and perfomiance of the Timken ADAPT? bearing used in the float positions on slab support rolls in the bender, bow, straightener and horizontal segments of Continuous Slab Casters [Figure 1]. This bearing was first introduced in 2011 and described in detail in a paper presented at the AISTech Conference that same year.
