Improving Surface Quality of Hot- and Cold-Rolled Strips - A Case Study

Interstitial-free (IF) steel grade is used in exposed panels for automotive applications and white goods. At the reference steel plant. IF steel grade is produced through the blast furnace / basic oxygen steelmaking (BF / BOF) process route with RH degasser employed for secondary steelmaking. Liquid steel is cast at a conventional slab caster with vertical bending design. Cast slabs are scarfed at conditioning yard and are inspected for surface defects and imperfections. The conditioned slabs are sent to Hot Strip Mill (HSM) for reheating and hot rolling. Hot rolled coils are cold rolled at the Cold Rolling Mill (CRM) Complex.
