Creation of a partnership between the nuclear and aerospace human factors communities resulted in development of a new approach for the systematic analysis and prediction of human errors and their contributing influences. The resulting approach (FRamework Assessing Notorious Contributing Influences for Error, FRANCIE) links tasks and task steps to error types, error types to performance shaping factors (PSFs), and performance shaping factors to corrective actions. It will support many types of analyses, by a range of users. Human factors and domain expertise is captured in the content and structure of the framework and in linkages between elements. Human error analyst expertise is captured in the way the framework is used and in linkages to cognitive models, psychometrics, ergometrics, and error reduction strategies. Elements and structures in the framework are designed to be easily selected and assembled into a model of a specific task as the user navigates through the framework. The framework is designed to expand to other domains (e.g. process control, medicine, other transportation domains, etc.) through refinement of generic errors and performance shaping factors for those domains. The paper demonstrates the usefulness of the mutual sharing of ideas and methodologies between the nuclear and aerospace human factors communities.
