The purpose of this paper is to present the design concept of the advanced main control board (MCB) (Yenn, 1999) for the Taiwan Research Reactor System Improvement and the Utilization Promotion Project (TRR-II) in Taiwan, ROC. TRRII is a multi-purpose research reactor with a total power of ~20MW. The design concept of the MCB is based on proven man-machine interface technologies and digital control systems, which are then applied to the TRR-II in order to ensure plant safety, minimize operator burden, and to enhance the efficiency and reliability of operators performance. To achieve these goals, the centralized MCB with integrated operator interface functions shall be developed according to the Human Machine Interface (HMI) design review guidelines prescribed by NRC (NUREG/CR-0700, 1995) and human ergonomic design theories. The key elements of the MCB are wide display panels (WDP), main control consoles (MCC), and the experimental control consoles (ECC). These key elements provide the overall experimental facilities and plant's control, display, and alarm equipment.
