There can be no doubt that the most important development in string theory in recent years is the discovery of D-branes In flat spacetime a D-brane is regarded as a subspace on which open strings may end.1 Since string theory modifies classical notions of geometry at short distances, it is natural to assume that such a simple picture of a D-brane as a subspace is too naive for more general backgrounds. A more abstract notion of a D-brane is required, one which coincides with the notion of a subspace when viewed in the context of only large distances. The aim of these lectures is to study how this can happen.
