In previous years, productivity was the main focus for the steel industry as themarket was booming. Situation changed and the market downturn forced theindustry to work on the efficiency of the equipment. Furthermore, more countries inthe world are implementing new rules and regulations not only concerning energyefficiency and CO2 emissions, but also hazardous off gas emissions.The right approach of SIEMENS VAI Metals Technologies is the EAF QUANTUM.This re-designed and optimized furnace concept stands for minimum conversioncosts, maximized output and environmental compliance. Through the utilization ofthe furnace offgas during the heat cycle, 100% of scrap can be preheated prior tofinal melting in the furnace vessel. This means considerable energy and cost savingswith the substantial reduction in tap-to-tap times (< 33 minutes). In combination witha big hot heel the melting phase is reduced to pure flat bath operation with lowestflicker. With an optimized and patent pending tapping system called FAST, a renewedvariant of scrap charging and retaining technology, latest analyzing technologies anda revolutionary design of the offgas-processing system this furnace is the meltingaggregate of the future. An energy consumption of 280kWh/t stands for itself.
