Typical thermal transfer rolls using fluids (hot oil, hot water, steam) consist of peripheral equipment that consume energy; as a result, the overall system efficiency is generally below 80%. Induction heating is much more efficient as the roll shell itself is the heat source. Further, because there is no high-temperature oil, vapor or combustible material to leak, operation is clean, safe and low maintenance. This presentation aims to provide a better understanding of the benefits of adopting an induction heated roll. Along with energy savings and the time and labor savings realized by the rapid heat-up offered by induction, an improved roll surface temperature profile (+/-1°C) based on the heat-pipe principle will be reviewed with regard to uniformity of nip, mechanical accuracy (runout), and overall quality improvement of the substrate.
