Plastic gears, in particular crossed helical gears are well known in the market. They are used not only for toys or other possibly low performance applications, but also for high requirements, like in automotive industry. On the other hand there is no standard existing for designing and calculating these gears at all. The new VDI 2736 part 3 has been added to the former existing standard VDI 2545, which was only available for plastic spur gears. This part 3 describes methods to calculate the load-carrying capacity taking into account the special properties of the plastic material. Finally, some examples are shown. Even the permissible material values are mostly missing, this standard will open the door to compare different designs and to have the basis for evaluation of material properties by institutes and material suppliers.
