This paper presents a new micro geometry modification method which is based on a discrete model of the surface of a spiral bevel gear. The surface of the pinion is derived from the discrete model and the contact lines are computed; this is done by using modern mathematical tools. According to the meshing performance of the gear drive, the size of the contact area and it's position are designed; also, the magnitude of the pinion's offset is determined. The designed modified tooth surface is represented in geometrical terms instead of specific machining tool adjustment parameters. The obtained results show that this approach gives full control of the position and the size of the contact area, whence it makes it easier to control the meshing performance. The proposed modification method can also be applied to other gear types.
