Experimental investigations were carried out with cylindrical worm gears with ZI, ZA, ZK and ZC profiles to investigate the influence of the parameters profile and surface hardness on load capacity, power loss and pitting growth. The worms were made of case carburised steel 16MnCr5. The worm wheels were made of centrifugally cast bronze GZ-CuSn12Ni. At a centre distance of 100 mm the ratios were 20.5 and 19.5. The results show that the calculation method according DIN 3996 to estimate the wear and the power loss are applicable for worm gears with ZI, ZA, ZK and ZC profiles. The influence of the surface hardness on load capacity is not taken into account in DIN 3996 up to now. Based on the experimental results it is suggested to extend the equations in DIN 3996, which takes into account the influence of surface hardness on wear. Concerning pitting growth the influence of the parameter profile is already covered by the calculation method according FVA 12/IV. The influence of the surface hardness can be taken into account by a new parameter for DIN 3996. By the extended knowledge of the influence of the parameters profile and surface hardness on wear, power loss and pitting growth, the designer now design a worm gear drive more precise.
