San Antonio is planning its first bus rapid transit (BRT) line along Fredericksburg Road. Many transit preferential treatments including TSP (transit signal priority) are being considered to minimize passenger travel times and enhance schedule reliability. For many years, studies have assessed the benefits of TSP in terms of travel time, delay and schedule reliability improvements. These benefits are then balanced against traffic impacts. One aspect that is rarely considered is how the traffic signal controller responds to the TSP settings and the frequency of TSP-eligible buses. The TSP settings describe how TSP would be implemented in the field, for example, the amount of time taken from a phase for an early green, the maximum green extension time, allowable frequency of TSP events, etc.
