Reactive air brazing (RAB) technique was developed as an effective alternative for the joining of complicated ceramic parts. It was found that additions of CuO to silver exhibit a tremendous effect on both the wettabuity and joint strength characteristics of the subsequent braze relative to polycrystalline yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates. The wettabuity of Ag-CuO braze on YSZ was substantially improved with CuO contents in the observed range between 1 an 8 mol%. The corresponding bend strength of the brazed YSZ joints appearred to moderately increase with CuO content. The addition of a small amount of titanium also helped improve wettabuity, especially at the low CuO content, However, no corresponding substantial improvement was observed in the titanium-added braze.
