Kansas City Hyatt Hotel Skyway Collapse

In July, 1981, two of three skywalks in the atrium of the Hyatt Hotel located in Kansas City, Missouri collapsed, resulting in 120 deaths and over 200 injuries. This catastrophic loss has been the subject of numerous investigative reports, news specials and engineering reviews since then. This presentation will briefly review the facts and circumstances leading up to the failure so that participants will better appreciate the problems that arose from the complex interactions between design, specifications, construction and quality control. Finally, the question of "do we really learn from our mistakes?" will be explored.
