摘要

In the aftermath of Word War II the de Havilland Aircraft Company began development of the world's first jet airliner. Culmination of that effort was realized in April 1949 when the DH106 was announced to the public. Known as G-ALVG (Victor George), the Comet prototype began its maiden flight on July 7 and was an immediate worldwide sensation. In January 1951 commercial service began. Three years later, on January 10, 1954, Comet G-ALYP (Yoke Peter) disintegrated in flight at an altitude of about 27,000 feet, causing the death of 35 people, grounding the fleet, and instigating the most intense accident investigation and failure analysis in aviation history. This investigation, which conclusively identified metal fatigue as the culprit, and the events leading to it are described.
