This article aims to show the key techniques,hazards and precautions in rescuing the victims trapped in the capsized vessels through study of three typical rescue operations successfully carried out during 2005-2006.It is not unusual for a ship to capsize due to collision,heavy seas or stability problem,etc.Such events happen so abruptly that the crew on board often have no time to escape and become trapped in their cabins,facing imminent danger of hyperthermia,suffocation and drowning.It is rare for rescue operations in such cases to be successful owing to limited time,high skill needed,varied technologies required and dangers encountered in such operations.In recent years,with the upgrading of China's dedicated maritime rescue force,significant breakthroughs in life-saving on capsized vessels have been made.In less than one year,from Dec.,2005 to Sept.,2006,the BeiHai Rescue Bureau carried out successful rescue operations for three capsized vessels,namely fishing Vessel Liao Wa Yu 25048,bulk carrier Fu Hua 1 and fishing vessel Lu Shou Yu 0768.In all,nine distressed crew members were rescued.The following analysis and discussion on life-saving techniques of capsized vessels and associated hazards are based on observations from these three successful rescue operations.
