The out-of-plane and in-plane shear strengths of a unidirectional carbon/epoxy (T700/2521) laminated composite with a thickness of 10mm at high rates of loading are characterized using the standard split Hopkinson pressure bar. Two kinds of double-notch shear (DNS) specimens with lateral constraint from a supporting jig are used in the static and impact compressive-shear tests. It is shown that both shear strengths increase slightly with increasing deformation rate up to nearly δ=3.2m/s (γ=640/s), and the out of-plane shear strength is about 30% lower than the in-plane shear strength at low and high deformation rates. SEM observations are performed to examine the effect of deformation rate on the failure modes in the DNS specimens.
