Machining process control is an effective means of increasing the productivity and quality of machining operations. While the control of a single process phenomenon (e.g., force, chatter) is well investigated in the literature, the implementation of multiple process controllers is seldom studied. Machining process phenomena are usually highly correlated and controlling one process phenomenon could adversely affect the control of another process phenomenon. This paper presents a supervisor which coordinates multiple process controllers and strategies in machining operations. The proposed supervisor adjusts the configurations of process controller and strategy modules according to the operation state. While satisfying the given machine and process constraints, the supervisor also ensures high productivity and part quality. A supervision architecture is proposed and the design of the supervisor methodology is developed based on the priorities of the corresponding actions of the violated constraints. The process controller supervisor is demonstrated via detailed turning simulation studies.
