Parents' Concept about their Gifted Children

At the Centre for Gifted in the Municipal Pedagogical Institute of Budapest we began a follow-up study with nearly 500 children, who took part in counseling. Beside the basic sociological data (age, gender, etc.) this paper presents the parents' concept about their children in two ways. Regarding the checklists they regard their children in the first line sensitive, friendly, cheerful and helpful, and their relationship as a great challenge, but satisfactory. We used an "Early Signs of Giftedness" checklist, and , we subjected the data from the E.S.G.C. to factor analysis in order to find more basic lines of giftedness. As the result of the factor extraction there emerged six main directions: Verbality, Spatio-Visual Creative Performance, Logic, socialization, Efficiency and Social Penetrance. Five factors can be interpreted as a talent profile of young individuals, it gives an opportunity to compare profiles to each other and to use the profile as a diagnostic-prognostic tool in the future. One of the factors (socialization) may call attention on the possible adaptation problems.
