Smart Transportation in the Puget Sound Region

I'm here to talk about how there are good reasons why Seattle is not Chicago. Figure 1 is symbolic of what is happening. This is the south end of the I-405 corridor in Renton. The left side is Boeing's facility. On the right side is housing in the area. To the north is Lake Washington. When you think water in our area, you think salmon because there is this incredible linkage due to the Endangered Species Act (ESA). There is congestion in both directions on the I-405 corridor most of the day. This is typical of what happens in this area. I'm going to break this presentation into two parts because there are a lot of things happening in Puget Sound related to smart growth. First, I'm going to talk about the land use issues in the area, and then about the 405 program.
