A SiC nanowires/Tyranno-SA fibers-reinforced SiC/SiC composite was fabricated via a simple in-situ growth of SiC nanowires directly in the fibrous preform prior to the CVI matrix densification. The nanowires in the composite consist of single crystal β phase SiC and uniform carbon shell of ~5nm, with diameters of several tens to 100nm. The composite showed slightly increased fracture toughness compared with a companion conventional CVI-Tyranno-SA/SiC composite, likely due to the very thin carbon coating on the nanowires that may produce very strong nanowires/matrix bonding.
