The requirement for the improvement of automobile fuel efficiency is one of the most important issues of today. In terms of lubricants such as transmission fluid and engine oil, there are growing needs for the development of low viscosity lubricants in order to improve fuel efficiency. In order to lower the viscosity of lubricants, both reducing the temperature dependency (enhancing viscosity index) and improving shear stability are needed. Therefore, we have to solve the trade-off between the improvement of the viscosity index (VI) and the shear stability of lubricants containing a viscosity index improver (VII).
