Recently, because of global warming, improving gas mileage in automobiles has come to be an important element in reducing the amount of CO{sub}2 discharged into the atmosphere. Lubricating oil is low in cost and benefits the environment, compared to a change of machine; using it to improve fuel efficiency has become mandatory. This article studies adding a viscosity index improver (VII) to the oil to improve the temperature-viscosity characteristics in the oil for use in automobiles (e.g., transmission oil, engine oil). In addition, we discuss technical trends concerning shear stability and oil film formation necessary in producing fuel-efficient lubricating oil.
