Applying Novel Nano-Patterned Surfaces to Macro-Tribology Testing

摘要

Surface patterning has been recently adopted to improve tribological properties of sliding surfaces under lubrication conditions. Surface patterns are expected to reduce the friction force by efficiently generating the fluid pressure or by the effect of oil pockets, which increasing the thickness of the fluid film. If the height of surface pattern is sufficiently low at a nanometer scale, a fluid film easily forms at a lower sliding velocity and good tribological properties are expected. The nano-pattern, however, easily disappeared by a slight wear in industrial applications. In this paper, we propose a novel nano-patterning method that can be easily fabricated for large area and is robust against wear or plastic deformation.
