NRC Involvement with the Proposed MOX Facility(Abstract)

The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) has the regulatory oversight for the proposed mixed, uranium-plutonium oxide (MOX) Fuel Fabrication Facility (MFFF) at the Savannah River Site (SRS) in South Carolina. The MFFF will purify weapons grade plutonium and convert it into nuclear fuel for subsequent disposition. The NRC has received a license application and supporting information for the MFFF, and has issued a final Safety Evaluation Report with open issues. Many of the issues involve chemical and process safety. This paper provides an overview of the program and the NRC's involvement, and briefly discusses the chemical and process safety issues of the proposed facility.
