NRC staff approves proposed MOX plant

A plan to build a uranium and plutonium processing facility moves a step closer to reality. A plan to build a processing plant that would convert depleted uranium and weapons-grade pluto-nium into mixed oxide (MOX) fuel moved a step forward in January when the staff of the Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave a thumbs up to the project. The staff's recommendation was included in the final environmental impact statement (FEIS) prepared for the proposed construction and operation of the MOX fabrication facility at the Department of Energy's Savannah River Site (SRS), in South Carolina.
