Mating of the radial sealing lip with the shaft in sealing node is characterised by the fact that during the rest phase (n = 0 rpm) and at the beginning of shaft rotation (starting) occurs a direct contact of the lip and shaft surface. During the shaft rotation (n 0), a lubricating film forms between the lip and the shaft. Consequently, abrasive wear of elastomer sealing lip takes place during start phase, when the lip displaces in relation to the metal shaft surface. In order to examine the effect of shaft surface treatment on sealing lip wear, investigation work has been undertaken. The relationship between operation wear of the seal and the torque of friction occurring at the beginning of the operation between the lip and the shaft was analysed.
