Nanoparticles of titanium dioxide coated on activated carbon and doped with Fe~3+ (Fe~3+-TiO_2/AC) were prepared using the sol-gel method. The photocatalytic activities were evaluated by photocatalytic degradation of methyle orange in solution. The Fe~3+-Ti(VAC catalyst shows a synergistic effect at optimal concentration of both activated carbon and Fe3+ ion, which significantly increases the photocatalytic activity of TiO_2. It is mainly attributed to the fact: Fe3+ ion plays role in improving the photoinduced charge separation and in the interfacial charge transfer process. Activated carbon support produces high concentration of organic compound near TiO_2, prevents TiO_2 particles on composites to be reunited and possibly inhibits recombination of electron-hole pairs.
