Layered thin films composed of concanavalin A (Con A) and sugar-bearing polymers were prepared by a layer-by-layer deposition of Con A and the polymer on a solid surface and the sugar-induced disintegration was studied. The Con A/polymer layered film was disintegrated upon addition of sugars in the solution owing to the preferential binding of the sugars to the binding site of Con A in the film. The disintegration rate was dependent on the type of sugar and its concentration. Thin films composed of avidin and iminobiotin-Iabelled polyethyleneimine (ib-PEI) can be disintegrated in response to pH changes because the affinity of ib-PEI is lowered by protonation. The avidin-ib-PEI film is sensitive to biotin and analogues. Thus, the avidin thin films can be disintegrated by H+ ion or biotin as external stimuli.
