Desulfurization Mechanism of Stainless Steel Produced by GOR Converter

In order to obtain a lower sulfur content of steel in GOR converter, which in favour of reducing the desulfurization pressure of LF and adjusting the cheap stainless steel scarps containing high sulfur content, the desulfurization mechanism of AISI304 stainless steel produced by GOR converter was studied in this paper. The result shows that the initial sulfur content, basicity (CaO/ SiO_2) and Cr_2O_3 content in finish reducing slag of GOR have a great effect on the desulfurization. The lower finial sulfur content is easier to be achieved when the initial sulfur content is lower than 0.07%, although with a lower value of Ls (Sulfur distribution ratio between slag and steel). The increase of basicity could lead to a rapid decline of finial sulfur content, but the changes of sulfur content become very small when the value of basicity is more than 1.75. The further reduction of Cr_2O_3 (about 1%) could obtain lower finial sulfur content and bigger value of Ls, and the value of Ls presents a rapid increase when the Cr_2O_3 content lower than 0.3%. The value of Ls presents after the first increase to reduce trend with the increase of basicity from 1.65 to 2.0 when the Cr_2O_3 content lower than 0.3 %, and value of Ls reaches the maximum when the basicity is about 1.77 in the range of 0.2% to 0.3 % Cr_2O_3 and the value of Ls reaches the maximum when the basicity is about 1.85 in the range of 0.1% to 0.2% Cr_2O_3.
