Construction and Operation of the No. 6 Continuous Slab Caster at Kimitsu Works, Nippon Steel Corporation

No. 2 steelmaking plant at Kimitsu Works, Nippon Steel Corporation was equipped with three converters, two RH-degassers, and two continuous slab casting machines. It produced slabs for various steel products such as sheets, plates, and pipes. The annual production was approximately 5.5 million tons. In this plant, a bottleneck was the casting process. In order to increase the production of this plant, the No. 6 continuous slab caster (No. 6CC) was installed and put into operation at the end of November 2006. The caster mainly produces slabs for heavy plates and line pipes. This paper focuses on design features of this caster, operational result and application of the new equipments and systems.
