Steel Dynamics Butler examined modifications to the design of the tundish in terms of production as well as the impact to the final cleanliness of the product. SDI compared two separate water models provided by vendors for both the old and new tundish designs, with optimization of inclusion flotation during startup of the CSP caster. The results include inclusion analysis of original tundish design, redesigned open tundish, and an open tundish with porous block argon bubbling/Results show minimization of downgraded products on startup, improved refractory cost, greater minimum resonance time, and the resulting improvement of grade transitions. Descriptions of the standard steel making practices at the IMF and caster, and the trial procedures for obtaining the inclusion results are contained within this paper.
