CitiSteel USA is a producer of SiMn killed and Al killed structural plate products. As customer requirements have changed, CitiSteel has become a special order plate producer. With greater physical property constraints, the standard A36 grades have been replaced with higher strength plate grades. Producing these grades has lead to an investigation of how hydrogen, nitrogen and oxygen affect casting parameters and plate quality. Data will be presented that shows how these gases effect product quality and castability and what procedures can be implemented to better control total gas pick-up in the steel making process.
