Since the 1970s the formation and removal of disinfection by-products (DBPs) have been studied all over the world. The vast majority of the research has been undertaken in the U.S. looking at trihalomethanes (THMs) and, more recently, haloacetic acids (HAAs). While much of the work has focused on chlorination of raw waters (Reckhow et al., 1990; Heller-Grossman et al., 1993; Cowman and Singer, 1996; Pomes et al., 1999; Hua et al., 2006), this does not necessarily translate to UK and EU waters where pre-chlorination is not a common process. There is current regulation in the EU for THMs but little is known about the levels of HAAs (Malliarou et al., 2005).
