Large quantities of heavy oils, such as atmospheric- and vacuum-residual oil, are produced as by-products in petroleum refinery process. The conventional methods to convert heavy oils into valuable light oils are thermal cracking, catalytic cracking, and hydrocracking. In these methods, some coke formed in reactors and on catalysts. The coke formation is reduced by an increase in hydrogen consumption in the hydrocracking process, although hydrogen is expensive. Accordingly, cracking of heavy oils by using steam as hydrogen source to recover light oils could be a promising method.
