Lignin is a relatively resistant cell wall component of plant materials formed by the free-radical copolymerization of coniferyl, synapyl, and coumaryl alcohol monomers. The resulting polymer primarily consists of aryl ether linkages and aromatic rings that possess methoxy and hydroxyl groups. Investigating the chemistry of anisole and hydroxyl and methoxy substituted anisoles will serve as an important means of understanding the pyrolysis of lignin.
