Solid phosphoric acid (SPA) catalyst has been used commercially for many years at Sasol Synfuels refinery as an oligomerization catalyst for converting Fischer-Tropsch (F-T) derived light olefins to transportation fuel. Catalyst hydration (water content) [1] is one of the important aspects of the SPA catalyst, as it influences the nature of the active phase. The active phase is a mixture of phosphoric acid species which is dependent on the feed water content and the operating temperature [2].
