In order to handle heavier and more metal contaminated residue feedstocks, the refineries need better and more stable fluid catalytic cracking catalysts all the time. The catalysts must also maintain high activity and stability during its lifetime. To do so the catalyst has to be properly designed and optimized. We have earlier shown that the naphtha production was dependant on the zeolite and matrix surface areas and increased with the zeolite to matrix surface area ratio, ZSA/MSA, when a North Sea atmospheric residue was used as feed in the circulating ARCO pilot unit. In addition the catalyst also must be optimized according to other factors, such as metal tolerance, matrix acidity and delta coke.
