In the past, creating an FPGA-based processor system required selecting the desired processor and peripherals, and then having to connect everything together. Today, FPGA-based, pre-assembled processor systems with pre-built operating systems enable users to start with tested systems that rival the ease of use of off-the-shelf ASSP processors. However, unlike ASSPs, users can easily modify and expand processor systems, mapping to the end-product requirements. We will examine today's solutions, how to implement such systems, and how to expand systems to meet end-product requirements.
