In this study, bacteriophages isolated from activated sludge samples were fluorescently labeled by DAPI (4‵, 6-Diamidino-2-phenylindole). The fluorescently labeled bacteriophages were applied to stain and detect their bacterial host in pure culture and in the activated sludge samples by visualizing under the fluorescent microscope. The DAPI labeled bacteriophages were also used to study their host range on selected bacterial pure cultures isolated from the activated sludge process. The host range study results and the ability of fluoresecntly labeled phages to stain and detect their host bacteria showed that bacteriophages labeled by nucleic acid specific fluorescent dyes could be utilized for the detection of phage sensitive bacteria in activated sludge samples.
