This paper deals with the market related challenges caused by a growing share of intermittent RES. Germany has moved from a feed in support scheme for RES towards are market based support scheme where several players (direct marketers) compete on the most efficient market integration of RES. The success of direct marketers is mainly depending on the following factors: (1) Improve forecasting quality and online-metering of renewable generators (2) Remote-control of fluctuating renewables (3) Wholesale trading especially on the day-ahead and intraday markets with 24/7 operations. Germany decided not to implement major changes to the market design. Measures to improve the functioning of the EOM are being prepared. Main challenge will be to increase credibility that scarcity prices will actually materialise in times of scarcity. A market-based method to set the imbalance settlement price is key.
