Vaccine Use and Abuse: a Practitioner's Viewpoint

The worldwide production and sale of vaccines used in livestock and companion animal species is understandably closely regulated by government agencies. There must be some assurance that such products are safe and effective for the animals treated, and that there are no significant risks for persons administering such vaccines or consuming products derived from treated animals. However, from the standpoint of veterinarians and producers working with animal species generally considered to be of less commercial significance (minor species) or trying to control diseases with limited geographical distribution or simply low rates of occurrence (minor uses), the existing system does appear to limit vaccine availability. This paper attempts to summarize the current issues of vaccine availability in the United States; describes measures and actions taken to circumvent existing problems; and considers alternatives to improve the present situation with regard to vaccine availability especially for such minor species and minor uses.
