I first heard about the double layer in a series of lectures given by Professor Remy Bar-radas at the University of Toronto in 1961. At that time, there were three prominent names in double layer research: John Bockris had a large, very active electrochemistry group at the University of Pennsylvania; Alexander Frumkin was the head of the Institute of Electrochemistry in Moscow where over 200 scientists studied both fundamental and applied electrochemistry; and Roger Parsons headed a small group at the University of Bristol. I was fortunate to be able to spend time with two of these men early in my career.
