NUTRITIONAL FORTIFICATION OF THRAUSTOCHYTRIDS WITH VITAMINS E AND B12

It is known that many strains of thraustochytrids accumulate a large amount of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) in the cells. Then it has been widely used as enrichment feed for rotifers and Artemia in hatcheries. However, little information about other nutrients such as vitamins in thraustochytrid cells was available. It was reported that vitamin B,2 is required for population growth of rotifers. According to our previous study, vitamin E also improves the population growth of rotifers. Although thraustochytrids are not used as a feed for cultivation of rotifers, the cells fortified with the vitamins might provide profitable feed for rotifer cultivation. In this study, the contents of these vitamins in some isolates of thraustochytrids were examined. Andnutritional fortification of the isolates was attempted for utilization of this organism for the feed for rotifer cultivation.
