The interest on chiral smectic C liquid crystals has been renewed since Meyer pointed out that they should be ferroelectric based on an elegant symmetry argument.1 Their nonchiral analogues, smectic C (SmC) liquid crystals have also attracted fair amount of attention, particularly after Samulski suggested that a SmC phase is intrinsically polar.
