The ability to organize matter on the nanometer scale is one of the major enabling principles in the field of nanotechnology. This effort has taken many tacks including the development of restricted growth procedures for the preparation of nanometer-scale colloids and wires, the synthesis of new kinds of self-organizing molecules,the use of nanometer-scale architectures as templates to pattern new types of materials,3 nano-imprinting,and the use of scanning probe microscopes as lithographic tools for the preparation of nanometerscale patterns of materials on surfaces.
